Theatre was
always a dearest form of arts to me. I went on stage in my 4th
standard at Shivapura, Maddur (Which is next to Sathyagraha Soudha and Maddur
vada hotel). Since I was black, I was chosen for Ekalavya’s role. Fair boys
Venkatesh for Arjuna and Datta for Dronacharaya. It must be during 1978-79. My
selection for Ekalavya’s was researched after 20 years. Of course that’s how
teachers used to select the characters. Later, I did few roles. Then moved to
Bangalore where my school was next to the legendary actor Dr Rajkumar. The hero
Punith was a small boy then. I have skipped many of the school prayers to see
Dr Raj and heavily beaten by my PT master Mr B P Chabbi who is still serving at
Basaveshwara School at Mahalakshmi Layout. Call him on 9900293808. Sir will
explain you about my association with Dr Raj. I was thrown out of the hostel
for not attending the prayers. It was Saturdays Dr Raj used to come to his West
of Chord road house. I went and explained my issue. Dr Raj wanted to come to my
school along with me, but someone said they will sort out the issue. This is
how I was attracted towards films, theatre...

Later, I
did few roles in N S Rao’s Agnishike, Ranadundubi. When I came to Mangalore in
1988, we had a nice atmosphere for cultural and theatre activities. With the guidance
of Dr Katti, Dr Indrani and Dr Shivaprakash, we did “Oduvavaru” of Dundiraj, Poleeshariddare
Echcharike and Bandaro Bandaru of Lankesh and many more. Most of them were
directed by H S Naveenkumar, my classmate. He was a great actor. Dr T N Devaraj,
Renuka Prasad were no less than professional actors. In 1992 when I was in
final year I scripted a play on Van Gogh in the name of “Van Gogh- A tale of
love, pain and paint”, later in 1995 “Ello jogappa Ninnaramane”, Geejagana
Hakki, Sultan Katte and Kempu Deepada Kelage and Sattavaru HeLida Kathe in 1997.
Till now I have written 16 plays. All are about love and human relationship..
We Teach Life sir
I watched one of the wonderful plays (Sangama Kalavider, Manipal) which
played in the recent times which was directed by Prasanth Udyavar. It was a
dance drama on a war. All young people enacted so well and left us with deep
blankness. The subject was very contemporary and global. They were truly professional.
In fact, they were selected for National School of Drama for National Theater
Festival. I thought of inviting them to the college during golden jubilee celebrations.
Nowadays many youngsters are attracted towards theater but audience remained
the old crowd. We need to promote theater among youths who otherwise gets
distracted with many nonsense issues. We must thank Team Athitwa, Arehole Ranga Pratishtana, Paduva College for bringing multiligual theatre festival in the name of Rangahabba to Mangalore. It was truly festival. On 19.02.19 there is tulu play "Train to Pakistan". Don't miss it.
Recently, after a break of 15 years I
directed my own play Van Gogh. It was received so well. Art forms are the part
of the civilised society. It keeps the humanity live. Once in a while go to
Ranga Shankara and watch plays, art clubs or any other music concert. Definitely,
your performance in your chosen career will improve...
