We Teach life sir

We Teach Life sir

Theatre was always a dearest form of arts to me. I went on stage in my 4th standard at Shivapura, Maddur (Which is next to Sathyagraha Soudha and Maddur vada hotel). Since I was black, I was chosen for Ekalavya’s role. Fair boys Venkatesh for Arjuna and Datta for Dronacharaya. It must be during 1978-79. My selection for Ekalavya’s was researched after 20 years. Of course that’s how teachers used to select the characters. Later, I did few roles. Then moved to Bangalore where my school was next to the legendary actor Dr Rajkumar. The hero Punith was a small boy then. I have skipped many of the school prayers to see Dr Raj and heavily beaten by my PT master Mr B P Chabbi who is still serving at Basaveshwara School at Mahalakshmi Layout. Call him on 9900293808. Sir will explain you about my association with Dr Raj. I was thrown out of the hostel for not attending the prayers. It was Saturdays Dr Raj used to come to his West of Chord road house. I went and explained my issue. Dr Raj wanted to come to my school along with me, but someone said they will sort out the issue. This is how I was attracted towards films, theatre...

Later, I did few roles in N S Rao’s Agnishike, Ranadundubi. When I came to Mangalore in 1988, we had a nice atmosphere for cultural and theatre activities. With the guidance of Dr Katti, Dr Indrani and Dr Shivaprakash, we did “Oduvavaru” of Dundiraj, Poleeshariddare Echcharike and Bandaro Bandaru of Lankesh and many more. Most of them were directed by H S Naveenkumar, my classmate. He was a great actor. Dr T N Devaraj, Renuka Prasad were no less than professional actors. In 1992 when I was in final year I scripted a play on Van Gogh in the name of “Van Gogh- A tale of love, pain and paint”, later in 1995 “Ello jogappa Ninnaramane”, Geejagana Hakki, Sultan Katte and Kempu Deepada Kelage and Sattavaru HeLida Kathe in 1997. Till now I have written 16 plays. All are about love and human relationship..

We Teach Life sir
I watched one of the wonderful plays (Sangama Kalavider, Manipal) which played in the recent times which was directed by Prasanth Udyavar. It was a dance drama on a war. All young people enacted so well and left us with deep blankness. The subject was very contemporary and global. They were truly professional. In fact, they were selected for National School of Drama for National Theater Festival. I thought of inviting them to the college during golden jubilee celebrations. Nowadays many youngsters are attracted towards theater but audience remained the old crowd. We need to promote theater among youths who otherwise gets distracted with many nonsense issues. We must thank Team Athitwa, Arehole Ranga Pratishtana, Paduva College for bringing multiligual theatre festival in the name of Rangahabba to Mangalore. It was truly festival. On 19.02.19 there is tulu play "Train to Pakistan". Don't miss it.

Recently, after a break of 15 years I directed my own play Van Gogh. It was received so well. Art forms are the part of the civilised society. It keeps the humanity live. Once in a while go to Ranga Shankara and watch plays, art clubs or any other music concert. Definitely, your performance in your chosen career will improve...

Midnight Dreams-A dream seller

Last year, on one fine day someone called me over a phone and said that they are group of students from agriculture college Mandya and coming to Mangalore to visit the fisheries college campus. I said fine. But they were reaching at 11.30 pm and leaving the campus at 6.0 am next day. They did not have time to visit the campus. At around 12 am they might have reached the campus. Few minutes after 11.30 pm, again I received a call from a student expressed their willingness to meet me in the night. I asked why..anything serious? They said everything is perfect, but they have heard of my name through one of their teachers, who insisted them not to miss a chance to meet me when they are in Mangalore.  I was on my routine pooja...theertha. Unwillingly, I went there. It was 12.10 am. Surprisingly I saw two of my students (Dr Asha and Dr Bhavani) who were the tour leaders. They were so happy and they knew my flexibility and requirements. I thought it is their strategy to meet me. They were sitting so nicely in a circular form, a chair in one of the points waiting for me. They were all students form middle and lower middle classes. Lots of dreams; with no clarity. I added some clarificant and inspired them with my own stories. It was 1+1 course finished in 90 min. One of them called me recently and said he is healthy after listening to my talk. He was happy.. very happy. Till this time, I never imagined that this could be one of the outcomes of my talks. Of course, health is one of indicators of success. He wanted study abroad. He never had passport when he was in front of me. I told all them to have passport and driving licence. Like me in the past, many did not have that small amount to have them. While appreciating his success, I told him to take up a water issue of Mandya and work on it. He has agreed. When I asked about other’s performance, he said, I had informed them not to call me till they attain certain level of success. They will call me soon. What more a dream seller can expect.

Intensity of love must increase with time

Intensity of love must increase with time
Love is the most misunderstood word in the world. We were not taught properly. Children are not allowed to speak about love with parents, teachers and elders. They go by the assumptions what is shown in the media. Though everyone wants it, no one dares to speak up loudly. In some co-ed colleges, boys and girls are not allowed to speak. If they do so, they will be fined heavily. When you put a board “Don’t peep outside”, everyone peep out of curiosity. Since, the society is not ready speak loudly about love, everyone is curious about it and try to imitate what other society is doing. Valentine’s day is one such example. For some it is business, for some it is fun and curiosity for many. A true lover never requires the support of valentine’s day or coffee day. It just happens any day, anytime. In 365 days, about 1000+ different events are observed. Bicycle rallies, painting and photography competitions for saving river or lakes takes place all over the world without touching water or cleaning the river bank. Even in the case valentine’s day, people take a chance to propose a girl or a boy. The success rate is 5-90% depending the country, region, culture etc. According to one of the surveys, 53% of them break-up within a year. Reasons are silly in western world and in India, the same old issue caste, creed, fear of society, parents, supremacy etc. Falling in love is not a big issue; but rise in love is a challenge.
Men get attracted to any good looking girls. Many develop possessiveness and try to acquire their love. Many will fail in understanding what the other person is looking for? You must win love and “Intensity of Love must increase with time”. This is possible when you love someone without any expectation and condition. Unfortunately, love has become a bartering commodity. If you get love-you give love. This is the reason for all relationship problems. About 95% of the people are not happy, though they live together and claim that they are happy. Try to fall in that 5%. To fall in that group, you must try to love everyone around you. “There is only one kind of love in this world-Intensity and purpose may vary-Magada”. A true love brings only happiness. This valentine’s day, If you don’t have anyone to propose, you simply wish the watchman, driver, shopkeeper, janitor, attender or anyone you don’t wish regularly. From 15th February make it a habit of wishing them regularly. See the changes in your life...The happiness index goes beyond the measuring scale...Good luck.

Making of a leader
In the past, there were severe issues in many countries. Che Guevara, Martin Luther, Dr Ambedkar, M K Gandhi and Nelson Mandela did their best and brought the changes which they were looking for. It is the one man’s idea seeded into many. If you want the change, you change and be a leader. I am on the way. You be one.
I have seen many institutes including that of my own, where few people will be performing better and others as average performers. It is not natural or coincidental; it is severe crisis of leadership. “A good leader will create more leaders, and bad leaders create only followers”. Everyone is trying to occupy the higher positions, without a road map, strategies and a clear goal. Institutes are drifting with what comes along with time. It is not the building or funds that bring change in institutes; it is the mindset. Instead of one excelling, the average performance of the team members must be increased. Everyone is busy in suggesting things instead of taking a lead. I have seen name plates with their names and the foreign degrees. People go abroad, present papers, appreciate all good there, come back and keep quite. If they just try to implement the small ideas in their office, things will change significantly. Now you don't have to go abroad to learn big. everything is here in India. In fact, you can go as resource persons. There were good leaders earlier times. But, the present leaders are struggling to maintain the routines. Since, there is serious crisis for good leaders, grab the opportunity.
In the making of leader make note of the following points. Leader must be:

§  Knowledgeable
§  Confident
§  Fair and equitable
§  Inspires others
§  Respects
§  Have confidence in others
§  Empowers
§  Works with people at all levels
§  Communicates effectively
§  Has high ethical standards
§  Creative
§  Willing to take risk
And the skills required are:
§  Delegates
§  Motivates
§  Influences
§  Coaches / Counsels / Develops
§  Encourages teamwork
§  Serves as a model
§  Discovers
§  Creates new opportunities and goals
Most important words for Leaders
ü  The Six most important words      : “I admit I made a mistake.”
ü  The five most important words     : “You did a good job.”
ü  The four most important words    : “What is your opinion?”
ü  The three most important words  : “If you please.”
ü  The two most important words     : “Thank you.”
ü  The one most important word       : “We”
ü  The least most important word     : “ I ”
Don’t compete with your enemies; make them irrelevant by excelling yourself. Believe in you and have required harmless ego.. go ahead...you will definitely win.
Course on Innovative Ideas and Common Sense (IICS, 1+1)

You visit any industries and see the equipment, gadgets that are used in the production process. They are all innovative products that are developed by industrial research; some are modified by the end used on a trial and error basis. Of course they are developed by an engineer, a biologist or a scientist but from the industry. In order to make our students to play a significant role in any production system, they must be oriented to think “Out of box” and allowed to come out with their own ideas to tackle issues that they see in any process. In Agriculture universities, in 8th semester, students go for Hands on Training. During this period, there must be a course on “Innovative Ideas and Common Sense”. Whenever they visit field, they must identify the gaps which are affecting the process and/or collect the opinion of people who work there and find out what is that they are finding it difficult in doing their work.
Then, assign the issues with a time frame to a group of people and collect all ideas. Whoever comes out with tangible idea must be examined and approved by competent authority. Then it can be up-scaled in collaboration with required industry.
When I was heading Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dakshina Kannada, I saw people wrapping the papaya with news paper; but apples with foam wrap.

I and a progressive farmer Mr Balakrihna Sharma discussed and tried to copy the same thing for papaya. By sending the average length and girth of papaya, we brought the foam wrap from Rajkot, India and started packing papaya in foam. Before packing in foam, the farm gate value of papaya was Rs. 12-16/kg. After wrapping with foam, it went up to Rs. 32/kg. With a marginal invest of Re. 0.90, the incremental income was highly significant.

Many of such ideas are given in this blog, just give you some clue. Expand your horizon, look deeply, identify the gaps and come out with your own solutions and change the world. Good luck

Normal is boring

Life gets bored, if you do not know how to enjoy every moment. Even after attaining whatever you want in your life, the dissatisfaction continues. We will not be happy for what we have. We aspire for more. There is nothing wrong in wanting more. But my point here is not “Not happy for what you have”. It does not mean that we must settle for whatever we possess. As long as you have decided to take necessary risk and achieve your big dreams, keep going-but be happy for whatever you are today. You are the fortunate one among 137 crores of people in the country and lived here with good health and lucky to be here in the present position.
I have seen people with lot of wealth, position and still have lot of complaints.  They blame their bosses, colleagues, society, country, leaders... and list goes on. They don’t take necessary steps to change anyone of those they hate or they don’t change themselves. When you have lot of problems with many issues, it is a time to change yourself. Don’t try to change the things; instead, change your perception towards the same. When we learn to appreciate anything without any expectations and conditions, world looks better.

When Normal life is boring follow the below mantras; You see the changes:

Change the route: Take a different route to your destination and of course reach on time
§  Sing loud: Sing for yourself, enjoy
§  Change the dress code: As long as there is no dress code for your job
§  Have a party with unknown friends
§  Go to new places: When you go to new places, don’t talk too much, just listen to people and document all new things
§  Read books intensely
§  Listen to music of your choice
§  Doing nothing: Enjoy the solitudeness
§  Clean your campus/office
§  Walk in rain, walk alone
§  Observe all small things around you..like mosquitoes, ants, flowers, cockroach, rats etc.
§  Love all and love yourself

When start falling in love with yourself....you will do a great job. Enjoy your work. Good luck
