Finished reading this book. I wanted to read this not to understand our Banu Ma’m; but to understand the Booker Prize itself. After reading this, I understand that Kannada language is richer than English by many folds. English or western emotions can be written in 10 different ways in Kannada but reverse is not true. Since original thoughts are from Mrs Banu Musthaq, though Ms Deepa Bhasti-the young translator has done great work, in some instances translation could have been better. Some of the Kannada words just written in English which is difficult to understand by non-kannada people. Of course, language can be translated not the emotions which you have not experienced. I congratulate both the authors
The tiltle itself is bland, How can one translate the words like “Edeya HaNathe” “Hrudaya Deepa” “Manada Deepa/Hanathe”. While appreciating the Booker procees, i strongly feel that there are thousands of such literary works in Kannada which are worth getting booker and beyond. Of course, one must not judge the book based on the cover and booker.
